DIY Canvas Wall Art: Glitter, Photos, & a Quote

This eye-catching Pinterest inspired weekend project added the wow-factor to my room without much effort.

Ever since I saw the DIY Glitter Chevron Art by 'Penny Pincher Fashion' pinned on Pinterest over 1 year ago, I knew I had to try it. After that, I kept seeing DIY photo canvases, which I really liked too. So I used both ideas to come up with a little weekend art project.

Recently, I posted pictures on Instagram with these canvases in the background & my friends asked me/complimented me on them. {picture 1 • picture 2 • video}. Check out the video that I just posted too.. you can really see how the glitter sparkles when the light hits it -- so pretty!
Since I had taken a lot of pictures during the process from my cell phone, I decided to blog about it. I've included the steps, but feel free to contact me if you need any clarification.

First up, the red chevron glitter & the purple striped glitter canvas wall art pieces.
I used acrylic paint. & the glitter that I used is glitter used for art (from Wal-Mart).

I knew I wanted one of the canvases to be a mix of both the red & purple colours with a quote on it. I chose the following quote by Sam Levenson: "For attractive lips, speak words of kindness. For lovely eyes, seek out the good in people."
While painting the canvas itself, I used the same foam brushes that I used to paint the other 2 canvases above, but just lightened my strokes as I got to the halfway point on the canvas.

Lastly, I knew the photo canvases would be easier to make, but I wanted to add my own touch to make them stand out a bit more. In most of the tutorials that I've seen online, they paint the edges a certain colour or apply coloured strips.
Since I was working with glitter & going with a gold theme in my room, I decided to do glitter edges. Also, I feel like glitter edges are so versatile because they will look good with almost any decor.
The steps for these will be listed below the picture because they're a bit lengthy.

Photo canvases with glitter edges:
Step 1 - the glitter edges: Place a lot of glitter on a newspaper in the middle area (where the newspaper was folded). Apply tacky glue to one edge of the canvas. Firmly place the edge covered in glue on the glitter, press it down, & move it around to ensure that edge is covered in glitter. Repeat for the 3 other edges.
Please note: you can apply paint on the edges before you start this process so that none of the canvas shows through.
Step 2 - the photo: Apply a generous coat of mod podge on the canvas & place your 8 x 10 photo on top. I left the canvas face down with a heavy book on it overnight.
Step 3 - the finishing touches: The next morning, I applied a coat of matte mod podge on the photo & on the edges. The mod podge acts as a sealant. Also, using a matte mod podge will avoid any glares from the lights in my room.

A few points:
  • When painting the canvases, cover the edges and go over a bit to the back so that if someone's looking at the canvas from the side, the unpainted canvas doesn't show.
  • When working with tacky glue & glitter: work in small sections & cover the entire area that you've applied the glue to with a thick layer of glitter by sprinkling it over generously. Tap off the extra glitter on a newspaper/paper & pour this back into the jar of glitter.
  • If you're applying glitter to the edges of the canvas, make sure you press down on the glitter firmly so the edge gets coated well & the white from the canvas doesn't show through. (Alternatively, as mentioned above, you can also use a gold paint as a base first to hide the white canvas if you want).
  • The mod podge applies white, but don't stress. I won't lie.. this part scared me a bit when I applied the mod podge over the glitter & the photos & it was white. But as you can see from the final result, it really does dry clear.

I adhered these using double-sided tape right above my desk. They add a fabulous touch to my otherwise blah room - not only because of the glitter & the quote, but because I have my loved ones right there at all times :)

#marchphotoaday challenge

If you're following me on Twitter or you have liked my Facebook page, you might have noticed that I've been posting images with the #marchphotoaday tag. If you don't know what it is, it's basically a challenge where you snap a picture per day based on the topic/word for the day. More info on the challenge can be found here.

The challenge was an excuse for me to log in to Twitter more & it worked! During March I tweeted more & interacted a lot more with people on Twitter than I ever have before. I've posted my pictures for the month below & each picture is linked to the respective tweet so you can check out the bigger picture &/or what I had to say about it.

Is this something that you'd be interested in? The list for #photoadayApril is up if you'd like to join in on the fun. Let me know if you plan on participating in the challenge so I can check out your pictures too.

January 2011 Series: Explained

I've recently realized that if I decide to wear eyeshadow, I usually grab the same shades of eyeshadows over and over again. I have decided that this January (2011), I will put a stop to that... or attempt to at least. It should not be too hard considering that January is a comparatively slow month in university. I'm attempting a different look for each day, which means that there should not be any repeats in the 31 looks that I hope to post. This will allow me to use makeup that has been sitting in my drawers and is usually untouched. It also means that I will be posting more wearable looks (since I will be wearing these throughout the day), unlike the over the top and bright looks that I mostly like to experiment with and have posted on this blog. I'll also be trying out various colour combinations, so if there's a colour combination that you would like to see incorporated in a look, leave a comment below and let me know.

I'll be posting the smaller thumbnails of the looks on the Makeup Looks page as well.

Can I really play around with different makeup and blog every single day? It will definitely be a challenge for me. Stay tuned to find out how this challenge works out.

Happy New Year

I only like to apply henna on special occasions: the 2 Eids and weddings. Since henna is mostly applied during some sort of celebration, I thought I'd bring in the new year with the latest henna design I attempted.
Happy New Year!

Best wishes to all my readers for 2011 ♥

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

I felt a little festive today, so I wore green for St. Patty's Day.

I was supposed to be studying in the library, but got bored & decided to take a webcam break :)
I noticed that I don't have a lot of green in my closet. The blouse that I'm wearing is from Sirens' classier days. Anyone know that short, classy phase which Sirens went through? It used to have mainly clubbing wear, then it came out with some really sophisticated pieces, & now it's back to blah. I always get compliments on this blouse & people are somewhat shocked when I tell them it's from Sirens so I thought I'd share.

Happy St. Patrick's Day once again!

Drink & party responsibly.

BIRTHDAY GIRL discloses picture editing secret

It's my 21st birthday today :D

& since I feel generous, I want to share a little secret. Recently I uploaded a new profile picture on Facebook & people have been telling me that they love how the picture looks. They also ask if I edited it on Photoshop. My answer? No.

Wish I had the original for comparison
Then what did I use to edit it & give it (as my friend, Kristin, says) an "eclectic feel"?
Answer: Picnik! I've been using Picnik for years & I love it! It's an easy online editing program, which you don't have to download or pay for (unless you want to use some of the premium features). I love editing pictures because even though they might look blah at first, a few changes can really make a picture shine & that's exactly why I edit pictures which I like a wee bit, but not enough just yet.

For the picture above, I don't remember which effects I used, but I can tell I used more than one. However, Picnik is so easy to use that with just one click, you can give your picture a completely different look! Don't believe me? Take a look below. I have edited a picture using effects that I've used the most on Picnik so far.

I thought I'd edit a picture in which I'm wearing black eyeshadow (I was experimenting with the 120 palette), red lipstick (Revlon Matte lipstick in In the Red), & diamond hoop earrings so you can see how the different effects works with certain colours (i.e., brighten up the red or darken the blacks, etc.).

I'm loving the way the red lipstick looks in the Cross Process effect.. hot!
While adding effects, you have the option to make brightness, fade, & a few other changes within different effects, but for the purpose of this post & comparison, the type of effect was clicked just once & saved without making any further adjustments.

Which effects are my favourite?
Answer: The effects that I lean toward using the most are Orton-ish, Cross Process, Lomo-ish. At times I like to use these effects separately, other times I combine a few effects to get the look that I desire. I have to admit that I've never really used the Boost effect because I think it makes the pictures look too loud & in your face, which completely clashes with my personality. I definitely know a few people with awesome personalities who could rock pictures with the Boost effect though.

Picnik also offers other editing features such as crop, rotate, add effects (the ones that I used + more), add text, add stickers, add frames, make a collage, & much more. I also use Picnik to add the watermark that you see in my pictures (I know the watermark can get annoying, but as long as it prevents people from stealing my pictures & using them to make fake profiles, I am content).

So what are you waiting for? Check Picnik out!

Happy experimenting while I go celebrate being 21!!

Got the layout all figured out.. finally!

For a while now, I have been looking for the perfect layout. I find that a layout is one of the most important things about your blog because it is the readers first impression about your blog & can also reflect your style. Some of the things that I look for in a layout are neatness, clean lines, bold titles, colours that complement each other, & overall appearance. I'm glad to say that I have finally found all of those things in a layout after a really long time. It's also made quite the impression on people who visit my blog because I have received tons of compliments, which I'd like to thank everyone for.

I thought I'll take you on a little tour of all the layouts that I've had in the past 1 and a 1/2 weeks.

Layout #1: Birdie's Secret Garden by Gisele Jaquenod I really liked the colour palette, the comments section, & pretty much everything besides the birdie, flowers, & grass on top. Visit Gisele Jaquenod's website & browse around her free blog templates or her custom blog & web designs. I love some of the custom designs that she's done.. So talented!

Layout #2: Grunge Theme by Anshul Dudeja
Last week I finally decided to change my layout. I really liked the drop down ribbons & the way the date showed up on this one, but there was still something off. I couldn't quite figure out what that something was till I found...

Layout #3: Aaah Perfection! (haha, kidding. It's actually called..) Template Setembro by Templates Novo Blogger

I love the slider, I love the tabs on top. I love the way all the posts show up on the home page. Love the way the most recent post shows up (bolded title with a different coloured background). Love the wide sidebar. Love the way the quoted text shows up in my posts. Okay, so you get the point.. I love it!

With my layout all figured out I can now resume blogging. Okay, so I still have to make a few minor changes, but that doesn't have to stop me. Point is, when I open my blog now it feels like I belong here & I look forward to blogging more now. Funny how a layout can do that. Or maybe I'm just weird. But anywho, I'm excited about my new layout & upcoming posts. Hope you are too!
